Puppet Sets

Due to the fact that our house is currently undergoing some major construction, everywhere looks like a proverbial shit tip.

The benefit of this is that I have plenty of flexibility with where I can film and what I can alter.
Mother Dearest has even given me permission to paint on the wall of the kitchen - but I have decided to take a different approach. In order to make the set for the puppets more 'professional-but-not-really', I am going to cover the wall in paper.
Such has been done, but instead of opting for the neater approach seen in the picture above, I decided to make the background more rough and checkerboard-like, but painting half of the A3 papers black, and the other half white - which will stand out, but not so extremely that the puppets will be washed out.
After coming back from my driving lesson, it was pretty dark--which gave me a chance to explore further with lighting.

First of all, I [carefully] propped the lights against the picture rail, which would act as overhead lighting. I did not like this due to the fact that the picture picked up on my phone was too dark and grainy.

Additionally, I used a puppet to see how the light would make it look, and the effect gained was similar to just switching on the light: The blue and green looks washed out and less interesting.
On the other hand, when I put the lights into shoes for support and had them facing the set; shining from below, the light was brighter and more dramatic.
As seen below, the puppet is bright well lit and the colours are more vibrant. There are lights in the puppet's eyes, which makes it look more alive  and the background could easily be made to look more intense in the editing process.
